Last night, Los Angeles Police Department shut down Hollywood Mega Club

Avalon during the weekly Control party. Details are still thin, but apparently the club first

began denying entrance due to capacity issues before the lights came up and police

emptied out the several Thousand revelers.

Prices and crazy Ravers have nothing to do with what happened last night. Once

again, they over sold tickets and filled the house only this time they were caught by the

fire marshal and were forced to shut down. The only people, who are at fault, are the staff

of Avalon, and they need to take responsibility. Obviously they would like oversell

tickets because all of that cash is going in their pockets, but hopefully from now on they

will acknowledge the capacity limit for the size of their venue.

Riot police, helicopters and fire were all on site to shut down the entire block of Vine

between Hollywood Boulevard and Yucca where the club is located. There are no reports

of any incidents as the crowd was dispersed.

This shut down occurs around the same time as a series of nightclub shut down in

New York City. Ironically, this is also the same week that the Los Angeles Coliseum, the

venue for Electric Daisy Carnival, announced that it would resume bookings of electronic

music events following a highly publicized moratorium on such events.

U-R-B has calls in to representatives of Avalon and Control, as well as the electro

band Dada Life who were scheduled to headline last night’s event.

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – President Barack Obama told U.S. troops in a surprise holiday-season visit Friday that they are making important progress in Afghanistan, and he pledged the country would never again be a “safe haven for terrorists.” But a war-strategy meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai was scrapped at the last minute.

“You will succeed in your mission,” Obama told more than 3,500 cheering troops in a huge hangar. “We said we were going to break the Taliban’s momentum. That’s what you’re doing. You’re going on the offense, tired of playing defense.”

Obama had traveled to Afghanistan to thank the troops and to deal with frayed relations with Karzai. But after he flew 14 hours for the visit, the White House said Obama couldn’t make the short additional trip to meet with Karzai in Kabul because the weather was too bad for helicopter travel.

Instead, the two leaders spoke by telephone, Obama at the air base and Karzai in Kabul.

Obama’s visit, his second to Afghanistan as president, came a year after he widened the ever deadlier war and ahead of the completion later this month of a review of the 9-year-plus conflict.

“I don’t need to tell you this is a tough fight,” Obama said. He met with the top NATO commander in Afghanistan, U.S. Gen. David Petraeus, and U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, and also visited wounded soldiers. He presented five Purple Hearts, military awards for wounded service members.

There are now about 150,000 coalition forces in Afghanistan, roughly 100,000 of them Americans. The U.S. and its NATO partners agreed last month in Lisbon, Portugal, to begin turning over control to local Afghan authorities in 2011, with a goal of completing that transition by the end of 2014.

“We look forward to a new phase next year, the beginning of transition to Afghan responsibility,” Obama said.

“Thanks to your service we are making important progress,” he told the troops.

“On behalf of more than 300 million Americans, we are here to say thank you … for everything that you do.”

“We will never let this country serve as a safe haven for terrorists who will attack the United States of America again. That will never happen,” he said.

Obama’s visit came at a particularly awkward moment in already strained U.S. relations with Afghanistan. Leaked U.S. cables show American diplomats portraying Afghanistan as rife with graft to the highest levels of government, with tens of millions of dollars flowing out of the country and a cash transfer network that facilitates bribes for corrupt Afghan officials, drug traffickers and insurgents.

A main concern in the cables appears to be Karzai himself, who emerges as a mercurial figure. In a July 7, 2009, dispatch, U.S. Ambassador Eikenberry describes “two contrasting portraits” of the Afghan president.

“The first is of a paranoid and weak individual unfamiliar with the basics of nation building and overly self-conscious that his time in the spotlight of glowing reviews from the international community has passed,” the cable says. “The other is that of an ever-shrewd politician who sees himself as a nationalist hero. … In order to recalibrate our relationship with Karzai, we must deal with and challenge both of these personalities.”

Ben Rhodes, a White House national security aide accompanying Obama, was asked about the latest release of cables.

“We’ve had ups and downs in terms of the public revelation of information associated with the challenges in Afghanistan,” Rhodes said. “But I think precisely the fact that we’ve dealt with some of the very specific stories associated with the latest WikiLeaks disclosures in previous WikiLeaks disclosures, and previous books and articles, allows us to be able to weather this.”

Under intense security, Obama landed in darkness after a clandestine departure from the White House on Thursday, where plans of his trip into the war zone were tightly guarded. Obama stepped off Air Force One just after 8:30 p.m. local time, clad in a leather jacket.

The White House said rough weather forced the president to abruptly drop plans to meet Karzai in Kabul, the Afghan capital. The White House determined the wind, dust and cloud cover made it unsafe for the president to fly by helicopter from the huge military complex here to the presidential palace.

Waheed Omar, a spokesman for the Afghan leader, said Karzai was “not upset” that the palace visit was scuttled. He noted that Karzai met Obama during the NATO conference in Lisbon Nov. 20 and discussed the situation in Afghanistan in detail.

In total, Obama spent about three hours on the ground in Afghanistan, about half the time he had scheduled.

Obama is expected to give a speech the week of Dec. 13 on Afghanistan upon completion of the White House review of the conflict. No big policy changes are expected.

“I wouldn’t anticipate a major speech,” Rhodes said aboard Friday’s flight.

He said the scrapping of the personal visit with Karzai would not have consequences because of their recent visit at a NATO meeting.

In Afghanistan on Friday, reporters traveling with Obama were escorted outside the massive air field hanger to get a glimpse of the conditions that grounded Obama here. The wind was blowing strongly, kicking up dust clouds as troops streamed in to hear Obama. An American flag whipped against its pole.

Journalists who had gone to the presidential palace were told by officials that Obama was expected, and they pointed out camera angles to capture where both leaders would be standing. An American flag hung outside a doorway. U.S. armored vehicles were securing entrances to the palace. Carpets were ready to be unrolled.

At the base hospital, Obama met with platoon members from the same unit that lost six soldiers this week, the brazen killing of the soldiers by an Afghan border policeman who turned fire on his U.S. trainers.

The war in Afghanistan is the nation’s longest after Vietnam, launched in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Obama said he wanted to personally thank the troops at a time when millions back home are thinking of holiday peace, not war. This has been the deadliest year to date for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. More than 450 have been killed in 2010.

The president’s visit comes nearly a year to the day after he announced he was sending an additional 30,000 troops to try to gain control — and then get the United States out — of a worsening conflict.

The U.S. now has about 100,000 forces in Afghanistan, a record total. More than 1,300 U.S. forces have died here since the war began, and more of them in 2010 than in any other year as the fight against the Taliban has grown even fiercer.

Obama’s plan is to start pulling U.S. forces out of Afghanistan in July. The goal is to shift control to Afghan authorities by the end of 2014, a deadline embraced by NATO partners, who have 40,000 of their own forces in harm’s way.

Yet much depends on the hastened training of Afghan forces amid the fighting. And the progress is precarious.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California lawmakers enjoy a perk that seems like a luxurious amenity in a state that has been slashing billions of dollars from its budget: taxpayer-provided cars.

The state purchases cars for lawmakers to drive around their districts and the capital under a decades-old program, spending more than $5 million for the latest suite of vehicles that includes a $55,000 Cadillac sedan and a $52,000 Lexus hybrid.

Lawmakers are enjoying the benefit at a time when the state is in a financial mess and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has called legislators into a special session next week to address a $6 billion deficit. Lawmakers already have cut programs such as adult dental care and health care programs for children from low-income families, and more cuts are likely on the way.

California is the only state in the nation to provide vehicles to its rank-and-file lawmakers for unlimited use, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The Associated Press sought information about lawmakers’ vehicles and the cost to taxpayers as part of an ongoing examination of California legislative records and spending. The record-keeping officers of the Assembly and Senate supplied the information in response to a formal request.

The compensation and benefits given to California lawmakers has come under intense criticism in the last year. Legislative officials fought an 18 percent cut in lawmakers’ pay and benefits in 2009 while other state employees were enduring three-day-a-month furloughs.

The reductions eventually were approved, along with lowering monthly vehicle allowances for lawmakers.

“It just says, ‘What’s ours is ours; the rules don’t apply to us,’” said Charles Murray, chairman of the California Citizens Compensation Commission, an independent body that sets the compensation for lawmakers and constitutional officers. “I think in tough economic times, all these little sweetheart deals, all these perks, start to come to the surface and people start to ask questions.”

The Legislature’s vehicle program dates to the 1950s, when lawmakers decided it was cheaper to buy cars and gas than to be reimbursed by the mile. Jon Waldie, the Assembly’s chief administrative officer, said he believes the rationale remains valid, particularly with the Internal Revenue Service’s standard business reimbursement rate at 50 cents per mile.

Senate Minority Leader Bob Dutton, a Republican from Rancho Cucamonga, said he believes the current system is cheaper than reimbursing legislators for each mile they drive, but also said the program should be re-evaluated as lawmakers look for areas to cut costs.

“There’s a lot of things that need to be looked at, and we could revisit this as well,” said Dutton, who drives a 2005 Chevy Tahoe under the program.

Taxpayers spent $3.5 million to buy the 99 vehicles lawmakers use when they visit their home districts.

The Assembly spent another $1.4 million to buy 49 Toyota Camry Hybrids for 51 lawmakers who live far from the state capital and use the vehicles when they are in Sacramento. The Senate spends an additional $81,000 a year to lease 25 vehicles for senators’ use in Sacramento.

Their rides range from a $9,900 2004 Toyota Prius to a $55,000 Cadillac STS. The state spent an average of $35,250 on all vehicles lawmakers use in their districts.

Lawmakers pay a percentage of their vehicle’s cost — 10 percent for less expensive vehicles and more for higher-end models — through a payroll deduction. Taxpayers pick up the rest while also paying the gasoline costs for lawmakers, who are given state-issued charge cards.

The Legislature said it could not provide information about how many miles each vehicle was driven or where lawmakers drive their vehicles because it does not keep track.

The Legislature buys the vehicles outright, then leases them to lawmakers at a state-subsidized rate. The Legislature determines the amount lawmakers must pay above the monthly vehicle allowance, if any, and deducts that from their paychecks.

The amount lawmakers contribute varies greatly, depending on the cost of the vehicle they choose. Assemblywoman Lori Saldana, D-San Diego, contributes $31.02 a month toward her 2005 Honda Accord hybrid, while Assemblyman Jim Nielsen, R-Yuba City, pays the most, $397.10, toward his 2009 Ford Edge. Dutton pays $38.79 a month for his Tahoe.

Under the reductions approved last year by the compensation commission, the maximum amount the state will contribute toward a lawmaker’s vehicle was reduced from $350 to $287 in the Senate and from $400 to $328 in the Assembly. In June, the commission decided against any further cuts for lawmakers or statewide officials.

The most expensive vehicles are used by two Southern California Democrats. Sen. Ron Calderon of Monterey Park drives a $54,830 2006 Cadillac STS while Sen. Gil Cedillo of Los Angeles uses a $52,235 2007 Lexus LX 400H hybrid.

Calderon likes an American-made car roomy enough to ferry staff members to events around his district, said spokesman Bob Jimenez.

Because the state’s monthly payments are capped, Calderon, Cedillo and other lawmakers who choose expensive cars pay the difference out of their pockets.

“The taxpayers aren’t being burdened with him driving a Cadillac any more than they are with a lawmaker driving a Prius,” Jimenez said.

Even so, those lawmakers reimburse the state for just a fraction of the vehicle’s purchase price.

Cedillo, for example, pays the state $373.64 a month to lease his 2007 Lexus, or $4,483 per year. If he continued paying that amount for his entire four-year Senate term, Cedillo will have reimbursed the state a total of $17,934, or 34 percent of the vehicle’s total purchase price.

Most states reimburse lawmakers’ mileage for official business. Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania allow their state lawmakers to check out motor pool vehicles for official trips, while Florida and Minnesota let them use rental cars. New York and the New Jersey Assembly (but not its Senate) provide vehicles only for their top leadership.

In California, taxpayer-purchased vehicles also are provided to the top five unelected administrators of the Senate and Assembly at a total cost of $180,500.

INCHEON, South Korea – North and South Korea exchanged artillery fire Tuesday after the North shelled an island near their disputed sea border, killing at least two South Korean marines, setting dozens of buildings ablaze and sending civilians fleeing for shelter.

The clash, which put South Korea’s military on high alert, was one of the rivals’ most dramatic confrontations since the Korean War ended, and one of the few to put civilians at risk, though no nonmilitary deaths were immediately reported. Fifteen South Korean soldiers and three civilians were injured and the extent of casualties on the northern side was unknown.

The skirmish began when Pyongyang warned the South to halt military drills in the area, according to South Korean officials. When Seoul refused and began firing artillery into disputed waters, albeit away from the North Korean shore, the North retaliated by bombarding the small island of Yeonpyeong, which houses South Korean military installations and a small civilian population.

“I thought I would die,” said Lee Chun-ok, 54, an islander who said she was watching TV in her home when the shelling began. Suddenly, a wall and door collapsed.

“I was really, really terrified,” she told The Associated Press after being evacuated to the port city of Incheon, west of Seoul, “and I’m still terrified.”

South Korea responded by firing K-9 155mm self-propelled howitzers and dispatching fighter jets. Officials in Seoul said there could be considerable North Korean casualties. The entire skirmish lasted about an hour.

Each side has threatened the other against another attack.

The escalating tensions focused global attention on the tiny island and sent stock prices down sharply worldwide. The dollar, U.S. Treasury prices and gold all rose as investors sought safe places to park money. Hong Kong’s main stock index sank 2.7 percent, while European and U.S. stock indexes fell between 1 and 2 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 165 points in afternoon trading, or 1.5 percent.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who convened an emergency security meeting shortly after the initial bombardment, said that an “indiscriminate attack on civilians can never be tolerated.”

“Enormous retaliation should be made to the extent that (North Korea) cannot make provocations again,” he said.

The United States, which has more than 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea, condemned the attack. In Washington, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs called on North Korea to “halt its belligerent action,” and said the U.S. is committed to South Korea’s defense.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned North Korea’s artillery attack, calling it “one of the gravest incidents since the end of the Korean War,” his spokesman Martin Nesirky said. Ban called for “immediate restraint” and insisted “any differences should be resolved by peaceful means and dialogue,” the spokesman said.

The supreme military command in Pyongyang threatened more strikes if the South crossed their maritime border by “even 0.001 millimeter,” according to the North’s official Korean Central News Agency.

South Korea holds military exercises like Tuesday’s off the west coast about every three months.

A statement from the North said it was merely “reacting to the military provocation of the puppet group with a prompt powerful physical strike,” and accused Seoul of starting the skirmish with its “reckless military provocation as firing dozens of shells inside the territorial waters of the” North.

Government officials in Seoul called North Korea’s bombardments “inhumane atrocities” that violated the 1953 armistice halting the Korean War. The two sides technically remain at war because a peace treaty was never signed, and nearly 2 million troops — including tens of thousands from the U.S. — are positioned on both sides of the world’s most heavily militarized border.

The exchange represents a sharp escalation of the skirmishes that flare up along the disputed border from time to time. It also comes amid high tensions over the North’s apparent progress in its quest for nuclear weapons — Pyongyang claims it has a new uranium enrichment facility — and six weeks after North Korean leader Kim Jong Il anointed his youngest son, Kim Jong Un, as the heir apparent.

“It brings us one step closer to the brink of war,” said Peter Beck, a research fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations, “because I don’t think the North would seek war by intention, but war by accident, something spiraling out of control has always been my fear.”

Columns of thick black smoke rose from homes on the island, video from YTN cable TV showed. Screams and shouts filled the air as shells rained down on the island just south of the disputed sea border.

Yeonpyeong lies a mere seven miles (11 kilometers) from — and within sight of — the North Korean mainland.

China, the North’s economic and political benefactor, which also maintains close commercial ties to the South, appealed to both sides to remain calm and “to do more to contribute to peace and stability on the peninsula,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.

Stephen Bosworth, the Obama administration’s special envoy to North Korea, said he discussed the clash with the Chinese foreign minister and that they agreed both sides should show restraint. He reiterated that the U.S. stands firmly with its ally, South Korea.

Gen. Walter Sharp, commander of U.S. forces in South Korea and the U.S.-led U.N. Command, said in a Facebook posting that the U.S. military is “closely monitoring the situation and exchanging information with our (South Korean) allies as we always do.”

Yeonpyeong, famous for its crabbing industry and home to about 1,700 civilians as well as South Korean military installations. There are about 30 other small islands nearby.

North Korea fired dozens of rounds of artillery in three separate barrages that began in midafternoon, while South Korea returned fire with about 80 rounds, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said. Naval operations had been reinforced in the area, the JCS said early Wednesday, declining to elaborate.

Two South Korean marines were killed and 15 injured, it said. Island residents fled to some 20 shelters on the island and sporadic shelling ended after about an hour, according to the military.

The Koreas’ 1950s war ended in a truce, but North Korea does not recognize the western maritime border drawn unilaterally by the United Nations at the close of the conflict, and the Koreas have fought three bloody skirmishes there in recent years.

South Korea holds military exercises like Tuesday’s off the west coast about every three months.

In March, a South Korean warship went down in the waters while on a routine patrolling mission. Forty-six sailors were killed in what South Korea calls the worst military attack on the country since the war.

Seoul blamed a North Korean torpedo, but Pyongyang denied responsibility.
